Today 448 years ago give or take a boy was boy in Stratford- Upon -Avon to a glove maker and his wife. Three days later he was baptised. This baby would go on and become one of the biggest cultural and literally figures in our history; his name William Shakespeare.
Everyone has a favourite play, for me it’s The Merchant Of Venice. It is thought that Shakespeare never visited Northern Italy and yet 2 of his best love plays, the Merchant Of Venice and Romeo & Juliet encapsulates the history, culture and Italian Spirit so well.
Shakespeare was able to understand what it is to be human this is what I believe has made him inuring. Anyone who hates Shakespeare is not worth knowing in my book!
So Happy Birthday William Shakespeare! Below is a selection of the best quotes from the Merchant of Venice:
“If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?” – Quote Act III, Scene I
“But love is blind, and lovers cannot see the pretty follies that themselves commit” Quote Act II, Scene 6.
“All that glisters is not gold” The Merchant of Venice Act II, Scene VII
